The GLC Returns for 2020 with several new features and changes. The standard inline 4-cylinder engine gets a 14 horsepower increase this year thanks to an improved twin-scroll turbocharger while the GLC 350E plug-in receives a larger 13.5-kWh lithium-ion battery and revised 2.0L engine offering up 103 lb-feet additional torque and greater electric range. A new-for-2020 MBUX infotainment systems brings innovation and ease of use with its 10.3-inch screen, steering wheel controls, touchpad interface and voice and gesture controls.
All GLC trims are available in both SUV and coupe bodystyles. SUV models feature a rounded rear cargo hatch which allows 19 cubic feet of cargo space in the rear. The coupe models feature a sloped rear hatch shape and four doors, despite the "coupe" name. The sloped roof reduces cargo area height, but total volume is reduced by only about 2 cubic feet.
Available in both rear-wheel drive or 4MATIC all-wheel drive, the GLC300 is powered by a turbocharged 2.0L four. It is mated to a 9-speed automatic transmission and produces 255 horsepower and 273 pound-feet of torque, which is available at only 1,800 rpm. The powertrain features five distinct driving modes including Eco, Comfort, Sport, Sport+ and Individual, which allows drivers to fine-tune responsiveness in the throttle, steering and suspension systems. When equipped with 4MATIC, the system splits available power 45 percent to the front and 55 percent to the rear.
The GLC350e 4MATIC plug-in hybrid pairs the 2.0L with a 13.5-kWh lithium-ion battery and 114-horsepower electric motor, for a combined 320 hp and 516 lb-feet of torque. The unit is paired with a 9-speed automatic.
The more powerful AMG GLC43 comes equipped with 4MATIC standard. The '43 uses the same 9-speed transmission as the GLC300 but with different programming that produces faster shift times. A 3.0L twin-turbocharged V6 makes an impressive 385 horsepower and 384 lb-feet of torque, making the large luxury crossover aggressive, fast and fun to drive.
The top-of-the-line AMG GLC63, meanwhile, is powered by a 4.0L twin-turbocharged V8 that makes 469 horsepower and 479 pound-feet of torque. Again, 4MATIC is standard, as is the performance-tuned 9-speed transmission, while adaptive dampers and air springs control the ride. The GLC63 is visually distinctive from the rest of the lineup with a grille shared with the AMG GT, plus flared fenders and quad exhaust tips.
Suspension on the GLC300 is handled with steel springs and variable damping via a 4-link system with upper wishbones up front, while the rear benefits from a 5-link setup. When Sport+ mode is engaged, the GLC's chassis decreases height by an inch.
Standard features in the GLC include 18-inch alloy wheels, power folding mirrors, power tailgate, keyless start, a rearview camera and power driver's seat with memory. Also included are a 7-inch color display with media interface which is Internet-capable and Bluetooth hands-free connected. When outfitted with Garmin Map Pilot, the system provides navigation, while a Burmester sound system provides concert hall music quality.
A host of advanced safety features are also standard, like Collision Prevention Assist Plus, Pre-Safe collision preparation with automatic braking and Crosswind Stabilization.
Interiors can be upholstered in various combinations of MB-Tex, leather or premium Napa leather in black, silk beige, espresso brown, saddle brown or platinum white.
Several options set the GLC apart. Both 19- and 20-inch wheels are available, aluminum-look running boards and a panoramic glass roof. For easy access to the cargo area, optional Air Body Control air suspension lowers the GLC nearly two inches and a hands-free access liftgate opens automatically simply by swiping a foot beneath the rear bumper. Multi-color ambient interior lighting, a heated steering wheel and heated front and rear seats are also available.
A Sport Package adds AMG body styling with 19-inch AMG wheels and a sport braking system. The unique Air Balance Package features a replaceable LED-backlit vial in the glovebox with its own ductwork, which disperses one of four in-cabin fragrances via an atomizer. The Multimedia Package features "MBUX" navigation with an 8.4-inch screen, while the Driver Assistance Package adds active blind spot assist, speed limit assist, lane-keeping, adaptive cruise control and more.
